About the Author


Gene has competed in NorCal USTA tennis tournaments. He's in the center here, with team members for the 2005 Super Senior 70+ tournament in Alameda, CA.

Gene Barnes is a Professor Emeritus of Physics at the California State University in Sacramento where he taught for 26 years. Born in Topeka, Kansas, he holds physics degrees from the California Institute of Technology, the University of Illinois, and the University of Oregon, including a doctorate in theoretical solid state physics. Since 1954, he has also studied philosophy at both the undergraduate and the graduate level and has presented philosophical papers at various university forums. He is currently working on a book about ethical philosophy.
He served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Monterey Bay Chapter of the United Nations Association for five years. He also belongs to the Friends of the Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy (MIRA) and the California Academy of the Sciences. In his spare time he pursues his avocations of tennis, hiking, golf, astrophotography, and sculpture. Occasionally he also writes poetry and makes mathematical calculations.
